Un meteorit cau al desert en presència d'un aspirant a bomber. Al dia següent dos catedràtics aconsegueixen arribar al fons del forat que ha provocat. Observen com un fluid viscós de color blau sorgeix de la pedra i en recullen una mostra. Poc després el fluid és habitat per milions d'organismes unicel·lulars que evolucionen ràpidament davant els seus ulls.
